Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Kenya

Location: Lukenya, Machakos

Total Budget: $54,410

Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Water, sanitation and hygiene

This grant will bring to completion PHASE II of ongoing Adopt-a-Community efforts. It will purchase a farm tractor and clean water wagon. The tractor will pull the clean water wagon for delivering bulk clean water to schools, health clinics and community water tanks (kiosks) in semi-arid Lukenya area in Machakos County, Kenya. It will fund and set up 2 community water access points in the form of kiosks for residents who are 2-7 miles away from a borehole or quality sustainable water source. The grant will provide funding to Children Peace Initiatives (CPI) - Kenya (lead by a Rotary Peace Scholar) to train Lukenya region teachers and community leaders. The training will be modeled after their successful peace curriculum in Northern Kenya. Trained teachers and community leaders will return to their schools and villages to implement peace initiatives and provide Alternative Conflict Resolutions. The grant will fund a toilet pilot project at a school in Northern Kenya. The school like many in this region has only one toilet for all the students/staff. This is a source of cultural conflict.

NEED: Machakos County region in Kenya has a population of about 1.1 million and is drought prone. This grant will focus on Lukenya section of Machakos County, which is extremely dry and lacks clean sustainable water. 2-5 mile walks to collect standing water, dry seasonal ponds and streams are a daily norm. Poverty has ushered many challenges to this community of recent non indigenous migrants living on former colonial sisal farm land. It is also home to recent relocated slum dwellers.

COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT:

The Central, Northern and far Eastern regions of Lukenya lack water and prospects for drilling new reliable water wells are diminishing. In 2014, the community approached Rotarians from Rotary club of El Cajon Sunset for assistance in community and school water challenges. Extensive consultation (2015) with a certified hydro/geologist, community based self help groups, Rotarians from Machakos, Syokimau and Paul Mue Foundation (PMF), a Kenyan Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that provides social services in the region, yielded data and input as to the best method of utilizing the available water resources. The foundation revealed that the community is experiencing additional challenges on peace and was in need of professional support in addressing peace and other community issues. Nearby Mlolongo City, an East African long distance truck stop has an unusual high number of Orphan children that need assistance.

In July/August 2016, two Rotarians from El Cajon Sunset travelled to Kenya and reviewed the project with RC Machakos Syokimau, Paul Mue Foundation and Children Peace Initiatives-Kenya. They participated in Rotary school desk distribution and orphanage feeding programs to strengthen club relationships and practice grant implementation policies. A final decision was then reached to support the grant and assist the Lukenya region.

BUDGET Total $54,410.00

The Rotary Club of El Cajon Sunset has made arrangements with a USA NGO to provide all orphan children in the area with clean drinking water bottles as part of the community improvement program.

ROTARIANS HAVE SET UP A PENPAL LETTER FORUM BETWEEN STUDENTS OF A USA SCHOOL AND KENYAN SCHOOL IN THIS AREA. THE PROGRAM IS FOSTERING FRIENDSHIP AND CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING FOR THIS AREA.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
