Project Description Region: South America Country: Peru Location: Galito&Aucayo Total Budget: $83,964 Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene Description: The Rotary Club of Iquitos Sur has identified two communities in the Amazon region of Peru in need of safe water and sanitation. This global grant will provide access to safe water to 207 families (approx. population of 1,035 people) in the community of Gallito. Additionally, this global grant will also supply (70) household pour-flush latrines to families in the community of Aucayo (approx. population of 1,000 people). Safe water and phase I sanitation are being provided in Aucayo by GG1746363 sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch. The project will include initial infrastructure purchase and installation as well as a focus on community empowerment through training education to ensure long-term sustainability. Financial sustainability plans will be developed with each community to ensure ongoing operational and replacement costs will be covered by the community once the project has been implemented. Community members in each location are engaged in the project initiatives and have both verified their commitment to participating in the project through provision of labor (in construction and training time) and materials (specifically supplies such as sand and gravel).
