The Nepal earthquake in April 25,2015 killed 8,500 and injured over 18,500 individuals. The majority of injuries were fractures (70%) but also spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries. The immediate medical care was remarkably good considering the numbers of persons needing treatment and the rural location of many injured people. Still the earthquake survivors have multiple impairments requiring long-term health care services. The victims are living with their disabilities in their community. No well-structured rehabilitation service has been provided which deteriorates the consequences of the acute condition and also results in life-long disabilities.Thousands still require rehabilitation to recover from the multiple fractures, amputations, spinal cord and brain injury sustained in the quakes and landslides.
The project will be based at Dhulikhel Hospital (DH), in Dhulikhel, Nepal The objectives of this project are to:
1. equip a physical therapy rehabilitation at Dhulikhel Hospital (DH),
2. equip 6 of the DH community rural clinics so that outpatient and home care physical therapy can be provided,
3. provide advanced physiotherapy training to professionals with a train-the-trainer model.
4. ensure sustainability of the clinical and the training programs.
In addition to the earthquake victims the people who will benefit from this project are patients, for example, those who have had a stroke, multiple fractures from the common motorcycle accidents, people with low back and neck pain due to the carrying of heavy objects, women with bladder and uterine prolapse and the many children born with developmental delay. These patients require additional ongoing physiotherapy and currently have little to no opportunity for continued rehabilitation. The desired outcome is to maximize these patients' independence and enhance their quality of life.
Project fund will be used to purchase the physiotherapy items for 6 outreach centers of Dhulikhel Hospital and for upgradement of physiotherapy section in Dhulikhel hospital. The fund will also be use for training of physiotherapy in advance level.
The timeline for this project will be 2 years.
