Scholarship Candidate Smruti Karale have been accepted as a Visiting Researcher in the department of Genetic Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College,New York for the duration of one year . She will study lung airway stem cells at the cellular level and explore cellular mechanisms causing disorders like Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary diseases(COPD) and lung cancer. These mechanisms serve as targets for developing novel treatment options thus preventing these conditions from progressing to chronic diseases.
After securing a full merit based scholarship, She pursued a 5.5 year rigorous training in Kolhapur Government Medical College. Here, she participated in rallies and camps for blood donation, sterilization, contraceptive distribution in rural areas, administering vaccines . Her internship year was at a busy hospital that provided costless treatment to the poor. She presented first research project that assessed treatment responses in patients co- infected with HIV and TB at the National Tuberculosis Association
conference. In US, she completed internships working in different settings from county hospitals serving the uninsured to IVY league institutions training world class physicians. This experience revealed a new set of challenges and exponentially improved my understanding of medicine and life in general. She come from common roots,no silver spoon, no academic pedigree. Early in life, she developed a deep passion for science, medicine and service which pushed me beyond the numerous challenges that she faced. The fulfillment achieved by helping people regain their health has kept my passion alive. Standing on the shoulders of giants, she dream to take medicine to the next level where we have a solution for ailments that are deemed incurable today.
In congruence with " Supporting studies for career-minded professionals related to disease prevention and treatment " in Area of Focus Statement of Purpose and Goals under Disease Prevention and Treatment, she will have the opportunity to conduct research focusing on prevention and treatment of lung diseases like COPD,Asthma and Lung Cancer.
Under the guidance of the Principal Investigator Dr.Renat Shaykhiev and in collaboration with scientists coming from all over the world, she will work on translating fundamental discoveries into leading-edge patient-specific genetic therapies. With the help of advanced cell biology techniques, she will study lung airway stem cells at the cellular level and explore cellular mechanisms responsible for the causation of disorders like Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary diseases(COPD) and lung cancer. These mechanisms serve as targets for developing novel treatment options thus preventing these conditions from progressing to chronic diseases.
