Service Project Proposal
Feminine Hygiene - Disease Prevention
Disposal of Sanitary Napkins by the Scientific method of Incineration
Proposed by: Rotary Club of Kalyan, RID 3142
Objectives of the project:
• To solve the problem of sanitary napkin disposal in and around Kalyan, District Thane by installing incinerators
• To reduce spread of infection due to unhygienic disposal of sanitary napkins
• To reduce environmental pollution due to non-biodegradable sanitary napkins
• To reduce clogging of public drainage system due to spongy nature of napkins
• To dispose 30,00,000 used sanitary napkins every year by incineration with this project
Why is this needed:
Kalyan and its surrounding have population of over 1.2 million. Survey indicates that more than 100,000 sanitary napkins are disposed, without segregation, into domestic waste every day.
Currently the sanitary napkins are mixed with regular waste from societies, public places and it's difficult to segregate them and dispose them off. This exposes this viral borne waste to the environment, animals and public at large causing diseases like Hepatitis B and C. It exposes waste pickers to disease-causing microorganisms E coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, HIV and pathogens that cause hepatitis and tetanus. Incinerating these napkins is the only way of getting rid of these problems.
Also, Soiled (used) sanitary napkins harbour pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria, fungi & viruses and are infectious waste. Current method of disposal is land filling and flushing them down the drain. Both the methods can harbour & spread infection. Sanitary napkins used here are not easily biodegradable. In drainage system, the napkins swell and block pipes. Hence, Installation of Incinerator is proposed.
What is an Incinerator:
A safe, hygienic, scientific & quick method of disposal of sanitary napkins is to incinerate them at relatively low temperature to harmless sterile ash. It helps in instant disposal of used napkins in a very scientific and hygienic way without generating harmful emissions.
Where to install
Incinerator is very easy to install. It can be wall mounted and required few minutes to burn the used sanitary napkins. It is proposed to install at Schools, Colleges, Ladies Hostel, Public Toilets, etc.
Who will benefit:
Every single unit of incinerator will directly benefit between 10 to 50 users per day based on the type and capacity of the incinerator, not to count the benefits to environment and society. This will also save the waste pickers from the in-human task of segregating this waste at various stages of the waste cycle.
The project aims at installing 80 incinerator units across the area in the year 17-18
Cost of the Project: 35,000 USD
Number of napkins incinerated: 6500 napkins / day
i.e. around 30,00,000 napkins / year
Indirect Beneficiaries: Community around the institutions and Point of Installation.
Partner/s in the project: Educational institutes, Public Institutes, etc
Schedule of Execution:
Project implementation will start in July 2017 and will be completed by December 2017.
Club members are involved as a project committee to decide the vendor, select the institutions and to make MOU with them, execution and visiting the site of installation in every 3 months to note the operation of the incinerators.
