Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: South Africa

Location: Phoenix

Total Budget: $35,600

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Improving water, sanitation and hygiene (General and Menstrual for girls) for students of Phoenix Secondary school, Phoenix

The Phoenix secondary school has 927 multiracial students from severely socioeconomic disadvantaged background. This school has very poor water and sanitation facilities which are fundamental for promoting good hygiene behaviour and children's well being. The students are void of basic facilities such as school toilets, safe drinking water, clean surroundings and basic information on hygiene.

Children have a right to basic facilities such as school toilets, safe drinking water, clean surroundings and basic information on hygiene.

Schools can also be a key factor for initiating change by helping to develop usefully life skills on health and hygiene. Children are often eager and willing to absorb new ideas. New hygiene behaviour learned at school can lead to lifelong positive habits. School children can also influence the behaviour of family members- both adults and younger siblings and thereby positively influence the community as a whole. It is also more cost effective to work with children in school based programs than with adults.

Workshops will be conducted to teach students, teachers and parents

Funds will be used for improving the sanitation, proper toilets, changing rooms for girls and boys, provision of safe drinking water, rain water harvesting and conservation of water.

Club members will be involved in workshops explaining students about hygiene, sanitation and conservation of our natural resources. Menstrual Hygiene Management will be taught to girl students
