Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: Shimoga

Total Budget: $69,529

Area of Focus: None

The project is to help provide facilities for e-education namely smart classes including organization of teacher training programmes on e-education and Wash in school facilities by installing Multi - tap Stainless Steel Wash basins with continuous water facility and drainage in 38 government public schools in the Rotary District 3182 comprising of 3 Revenue Districts of Shimoga, Hassan and Udupi in the state of Karnataka, India.

Most of the Government Schools provide quality education to poor and economically backward children with a nominal fees prescribed by the Government of Karnataka. A good number of very poor children are provided education free of cost. Most of the students come from a humble background and cannot afford to pay even the tuition the fees let alone contribute for the development of infrastructure facilities.

The schools are lacking in basic amenities for e-learning and e-learning is an integral part of modern education. The managements are unable to provide these facilities and infrastructure due to financial constraints. As such these students complete their basic education but continue to be e-illiterate.

Poor sanitation, water scarcity, inferior water quality and inappropriate hygiene behavior are disastrous for young children. Those conditions are detrimental to the health of school-aged children, who spend long hours in schools. The physical environment and cleanliness of a school facility can significantly affect the health and well-being of children. Disease spreads quickly in cramped spaces with limited ventilation, where hand-washing facilities or soap are not available. Too often, schools are places where children become ill. Despite good progress in recent years many schools still remain without safe drinking water, appropriate sanitation facilities and hygiene.

WASH in School is a first step towards ensuring a healthy physical learning environment. Schools with quality WASH in programmes can lessen the spread of Disease. School water supply, sanitation and hygiene education have a profound impact on the learning and health of children. Wash in Schools project is a positive contribution towards the ambitious Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan of the Government of India.

Purpose and scope WASH in Schools aims to improve the health and learning performance of school-aged children - and, by extension, that of their families - by reducing the incidence of water borne and sanitation-related diseases. Every child friendly school requires appropriate WASH in initiatives that keep the school environment clean and free of smells and inhibit the transmission of harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites. The project has been designed to meet these requirements in a scientific way.

Funds will be used to equip 38 schools with e-learning hardware and WASH sinks with running water
