PROJECT ZIKA: Group JUNDIAÍ -

Research Ambulatory for Zika virus study.

Zika virus was discovered in Africa in 1947. In 2015 was discovered in Brazil the relation between Zika virus infection and microcephaly in new born.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed, there is increasing evidence that links the Zika virus (ZIKV) and of microcephaly cases and other neurological disorders. This epidemic is become frequent in Brazil and other Latin American countries, and it is growing to the Americas.

Since 2016, the HU Hospital and Medicine University of Jundiaí started the Zika Project in Jundiaí region. The project objective is to study ZIKV vertical transmission (from pregnant woman to baby) and their physical and mental repercussions, both in the maternal and in children's organism. This project today is conduit by Dr. Saulo, from Medicine University from Jundiaí, without a specific place for the queries and collect of material for study.

the project has started with 745 pregnant women, and with 713 children new born , and 26 children with microcephaly. These 26 are under monthly follow-up in the ambulatory clinic for the next five years.

The study is supported by Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine . But the resources are not enough for a particular space for this important research, the queries and research are done in a regular hospital environment.

The objective of this Global Grant is to donate the enough resources for the HU ( University Hospital ) of Jundiaí to create a particular ambulatory for this research. The HU is governmental hospital connected to the public health system of Brazil, called SUS. All service by this hospital is FOC, and financed by the SUS. But the SUS doesn't have enough resources for the regular needs.

This Research ambulatory will be the first one ZIKC Laboratory and Zika Congenital Syndrome in São Paulo state with potential to attendance 2 thousand persons by month. It will be used for monitoring the children with microcephaly, clinic dedicated to teaching and care activities, providing an internship for students of Medicine, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, etc. This will collect the necessary material and will be a great assistance for future clinical research, such as those seeking the discovery of a vaccine against ZIKV.
