This Global Grant 1868701 is designed to install a water system for a rural Kenyan community that suffers from a lack of clean and accessible water. Through six distribution points the system will include a borehole, pump, generator, and a 20-ft. tower and distribution system. 5,000-7,000 Maasai community members will benefit directly from this project along with their livestock; two schools, a beading cooperative and an education center. Host club: Ongata Rongai of Nairobi, Kenya. International Partner: Phoenix Rotary 100 and Phoenix Rotary Club Charities (PRCC). This will be our 4th water project in Kenya.
THIS IS A WATER AND SANITATION PROJECT BUT ALSO INCLUDES:
1. Education: schools can retain good teachers, provide lunch, a clean environment for studying; teach hygiene, free up children from the task of carrying water.
2. Maternal care will be enhanced through the general improvement of community health and by easing the burden on pregnant women and new mothers of carrying water.
3. Disease prevention will be greatly improved. Water borne diseases are diminished because people can wash. Healthier food comes from healthy livestock and maintenance also becomes easier when clean water is available.
4. Cottage industries and economic development will be strengthened, especially through the provision of water to the Maasai Women's Beading Cooperative, as water will enable the establishment of a tourist store and education center on site. Tourism activities will also be made possible at the community center.
5. A more peaceful environment will develop as there will be a lessened propensity for conflict over water, especially during times of drought.
6. Life chances will be increased for people living in the area because they will not have to risk travelling to dangerous areas or competing with wild animals for water.
