Arlington Sunset Rotary has been directly involved with helping the people in the Mayan village of Chumpon in Quintana Roo, Mexico for many years. We have provided books, school supplies, furniture for the small preschool, and we had a club trip to the area in 2013. Last month there was a devastating flood in Chumpon, resulting in damage to over 300 modest homes with thatched roofs, loss of food and domestic animals, household items, and clothing. In addition, the water filtration pump has failed due to high waters. The only source of business in the village is a small jelly factory. At the jelly factory, 8 women work daily making and bottling jelly made from the pitaya and papaya, which grow readily in their village. They also keep bees and sell the honey from their hives. The jellies and honey are sold to large hotels in the Riviera Maya. The chickens that drowned were used by every member of the community for meat and eggs. This project will repair/replace the machines in the jelly factory and water filtration system/plumbing, provide bee-keeping equipment and bee hives to replace what was lost in the flood, provide chickens and pigs, make repairs to homes that were left uninhabitable, provide building materials for the villagers to build pens for the pigs, and pay tuition fees for students finishing 8th grade to continue their education in high school. Parents are not able to pay the tuition, fees, and school supplies for the students to attend school after 8th grade, even though the parents and students desire for them to further their education.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.

This project is ongoing and fully pledged. The President of the Rotary Club of Tulum, Mexico is working with the President of the Rotary Club of Seaside, Playa del Carmen, Mexico to visit Chumpon this month and will update needs assessment. Some homes have been repaired and some items in the jelly factory may have been replaced or repaired since the flood last summer. President of Rotary Club of Arlington Sunset (Texas) will meet in person in August with village leaders, and the other club presidents to confirm current needs. It has been verified that scholarship needs for current students above grade 6 are in urgent need of assistance for school fees in order to be able to continue their education.

Meeting with Seaside Rotary Club President and Arlington Sunset Rotary. Needs assessment update was discussed. Jelly factory in Chumpon is now operating. Women in the cooperative who run jelly factory need training in basic bookkeeping and basic business practices. Internet access is needed for this training. Meeting (electronically) was held previously with Tulum Rotary President and non-Rotarian community members involved in project. Due to COVID-19, travel to the village from Playa del Carmen has been restricted. Seaside has been providing food for over 240 people in villages closer to Playa, where people are out of work and hungry due to pandemic. Discussion about possibility of editing this grant to include this, which is an urgent need.
