School Renovation Project in Dhamane Village near PUNE
FOCUS AREA:
This is an ambitious Rotary project to transform a rural state government school in Dhamane village into a model happy & smart school by providing the proper conditions for school children to learn & experience a complete education. The Zilla Parishad (ZP) primary school is in Dhamane village, about 50 km north of Pune. This project covers the focus areas of Sanitation & Hygiene, Literacy & Health as per Global Grants requirements.
PROJECT NEED:
Currently the school has run down infrastructure, with broken building, toilets & water facilities which are woefully insufficient for the students & staff. The state government provides insufficient funds to the school, causing the school children to suffer. Attendance is irregular especially among girl students. Absenteeism is higher than normal due to poor sanitation & related health issues like diarrhea. The high dropout rates have been reducing the number of students every year. Hence students lack motivation to attend school & concentrate on their studies & extracurricular activities. This school currently has 107 students studying between Kindergarten to 8th Standard with 61 boys and 46 girls (April 2018).
PROJECT DETAILS:
The goal is to repair existing school buildings including classrooms to provide a comfortable & motivational environment for the school children to focus on their education. This includes repairing the walls, floors, doors, windows, floors & roofs. And provide proper electrical wiring, lights & fans. And provide furniture like school benches for the school children, tables & chairs for the staff, solar backup supply for the irregular electric supply, library facilities, computer laboratory with Rotary Distance Education Program (RDEP) for each class. The project will provide ample toilet & clean water facilities as needed. Besides, tree plantation & rain water harvesting to conserve water through the dry summer months will be considered along with improved facilities for sports & recreation. The key is to get the villagers, staff & school children involved in maintaining their school in good condition by direct involvement. The goal is to make this school a model for other nearby ZP schools to emulate.
