Proposal Form

The location if this project is in the community of Quebrada Seca, which is part of the village of Oquen, municipality of Jocotán, department of Chiquimula, Guatemala.

The community of Quebrada Seca is comprised of 574 inhabitants, made up of 167 families in 167 homes. Currently the families of the community obtain water from small wells or streams, which are contaminated. This contamination is causing families to suffer from gastrointestinal diseases, especially affecting the infantile population.

This project will build a water distribution and purification system. This system will provide clean water for the community, thus decreasing illnesses, and improving the overall well being of community members.

The project will consist of building a spring collection box, a water distribution tank, a purification system in tank, piping from the collection box to the distribution system and piping from the distribution tank to individual houses.

Project funds will be used to purchase materials for the project, provide hygiene training for community members and management/evaluation of project. The local municipality will also provide project management and skilled labor. The community will provide unskilled labor.

The timeline of project is approximately eight months.

The Rotary Club of Chiquimula, the Rotary Club of Fort Collins and Rotary Club of Burlington North, along with various other Rotary clubs have been working with this and neighboring communities for several years. There have been numerous site visits already, and a trip is planned for January 2019 which will include members of the Rotary Club of Fort Collins. This project will support past and future efforts as part of the community's long term plan.

I posted a few pictures of this project on this site. The project has been essentially completed. Final reports and possibly a few minor items remain, but the vast majority of the work is done and has been successful. Thanks to the local team for all their hard work!
