Beneficiary:NOT-IN-EDUCATION NOR EMPLOYMENT (NEE) INDIGENT YOUNG ADULTS PASSIONATE IN THE CULINARY ARTS.
Description of the Project:
There are over 4 million Filipino youths who are "not in education nor employed" (NEE). The Department of Labor and Employment defined NEE as those who lack access to education or training and labor market due to poverty, lack of qualification and health issues1. These individuals struggle to find work and do not contribute to the reduction of poverty in the country. The Culinary Education Foundation, Inc.2, the corporate social responsibility arm of the Center for Culinary Arts, Manila3 and The Cravings Group4 designed a program called the Cooking for Life Program (CLP) to help reduce NEEs. Consistent with the vision and mission of the foundation, the CLP was designed to provide education and training on basic cookery competencies anchored on sound green chefmanship skills, knowledge and values. It aims to enhance the competencies, knowledge, skills and attitudes of any individual passionate about culinary arts and food preparation, including cleaning kitchen areas; cooking hot and cold meals; and preparing, portioning and plating food for guests in any hospitality institution or establishment. Completers of this program take the TESDA Cookery National Certificate Level II and become work qualified.
Over the span of 4 years, beginning 2014 to 2018, a total of 636 individuals benefitted from 15 classes of the CLP. Of these, three classes comprised of a total 123 young adults were sponsored by The Rotary International D3780 and clubs under its jurisdiction in the Rotary Year 2017-18. The current project proposes the conduct of 3 classes of CLP among 100 scholars in Rotary Year 2018-19.
SUSTAINABILITY
The CLP is a proprietary program of the Culinary Education Foundation, Inc. The sustainability of the CLP lies on the support of the Center for Culinary Arts, Manila which encourages its faculty to volunteer their services to educate aspiring culinarians and chefs, as well as allowing the program to use its world-class facilities. The Cravings Group Foodservice establishments likewise support the program by providing the program participants the venue to practice their earned culinary skills through practicum.
In this project, the Program Officer of the Culinary Education Foundation, Inc. shall engage in the program as one of the scholars to be trained in the delivery of the program. Deserving completers shall also do a Return Service Agreement to assist in the education and training of the next class.
Crucial to the viability of the program is the support from friends, benefactors and partners in generating financial requirements to operate the programs. The foundation engaged the CLP scholars in fund raising activities for future CLP classes such as the Manila Food and Wine FestivalGala Dinner5 and Food TruckShow Down6. Support from local government assistance through available community development funds has also been utilized in the past. Such fund was crucial to the conduct of the CLPclasses at Ilocos Sur in the past years.
