John Vaughn English and Computer Laboratory
The John Vaughn English Language Laboratory has been a joint project of Rotary Club Tijuana and Rotary Club La Jolla for nearly 20 years. The program began with the work of Dr John Vaughn of La Jolla as a way to improve the quality of life for at risk youth in Tijuana. Volunteer teachers from Club La Jolla, Club Tijuana and student teachers of UABC, mentor high potential disadvantaged children on the subject of English while using current technology and preparing them for entry into college. New equipment and furnishings are needed to maintain the basic quality of the program for the children.
The project has used a temporary facility while awaiting completion of the Rotary Community Center (CART). The equipment in the current facility is past a state of utility. In order to achieve our goal, we will need equipment, such as computers, printers, desks, chairs, internet connection, digital blackboards. Estimated cost of the project: $43,893.35 USD
CART is currently at a state of 85% of completion as a Community Center, a permanent home to the English Language Laboratory and to assist the lowest income population of Tijuana. Through its existence, CART will benefit our community and strengthen Rotary principles in the region by assisting in the Promotion of Peace and Conflict Prevention, will assist Economic and Community Development and will support Basic Education and Literacy.
When completed, CART will be a multipurpose space to assist children, youth and women, providing the right support and tools, to professionally train them so they can assist themselves towards a professional or vocational field and rise out of poverty.
We need the assistance of many Clubs and people to bring this vision to reality and in the near term, a grant to fund the equipment and furnishings of the English Language Laboratory. Such funds will allow our Club to work to support the people of Tijuana to be successful where they live.
