Region suffers from: Access to prenatal and early childhood care is limited- Infant Mortality 50%; Food insecurity continues to be the greatest challenge in the Ixil; Almost 80% of Ixil children under five are chronically malnourish.
Project will address the needs by creating a supportive environment that ensures adequate maternal and newborn health in the Ixil Region. The project is anticipated to be a three year project.
Working with an international NGO Agros - Rotarians will work to:
1. Reduce families health hazards through establishing a network of community health workers;
2. Increasing the food security (including local gardens) and the nutritional intake for the most vulnerable families;
3. Increase and help diversify household revenue through women-oriented income generating initiatives - farming, artisan shops etc.
