Sterile drapes are essential to prevent infections during caesarean sections. Clean towels are necessary to dry the baby immediately after birth to prevent hypothermia. Clean gowns are needed to promote skin-to-skin warming between mother and baby. If these materials are not readily available, mothers and babies die.

These preventable tragedies have occurred at University of Gondar Hospital in Ethiopia because sterilizing equipment at the hospital cannot supply the demand for clean sterile supplies and linens for the nearly 10,000 mothers and babies delivered at the hospital each year.

Obstetricians, pediatricians, nurses and midwives at the University of Gondar Hospital have worked hard to apply the knowledge and skills in life-saving newborn care learned through the VTT project Saving Babies Lives in Ethiopia (GG1525173). A major barrier to fully implementing these techniques have been the shortage of clean and sterile supplies for the obstetric and neonatal wards at the hospital. The current hospital laundry system simply cannot keep up with the demand.

To meet this urgent need the medical team, working with Gondar Fasiledes Rotary Club, propose a grant to purchase heavy duty preparation and sterilization equipment dedicated to the Obstetric and Neonatal wards of the University of Gondar Hospital. This will be a collaborative effort with the University of Gondar, who will build the room for the equipment, train and supply staff to run the facility, and provide biomedical technicians to maintain and repair the new equipment. Gondar Fasiledes Rotary Club will oversee the purchase and installation of this vital equipment, as well as the training of personnel to run and maintain it.

Providing this essential equipment will guarantee that no mother or baby at the University of Gondar Hospital will die unnecessarily because sterile supplies were not readily available for every birth.

The plans for the facility have been completed by Ron Picford TRF Cadre Architect in consultation with the engineers at the University of Gondar. The renovation of the facility has begun. Demolition has been completed and construction is underway. Once the facility is complete and approved the equipment will be ordered and training will begin. Policies and Procedure development is underway.

2-May-21

by Karin Davies

The Construction of the facility to house the equipment to be purchased by the grant is almost complete. We are currently obtaining Pre-Importation Certificates for the equipment. Once those are issued we will purchase and ship the equipment to the University of Gondar Hospital where they will be installed.

Interim Report Submitted to TRF.

16-Nov-21

by Karin Davies

The facility to house the equipment was completed. The equipment has been purchased and shipped to Gondar where it arrived safely. We are currently arranging with Tuttnauer and IMESA to install the equipment, test it and train the operators and biomedical technicians who will be servicing the autoclave, water purifier, washer and dryer. This process has been slowed because of current civil unrest in Ethiopia. While Gondar remains calm, the technicians will come from Addis where there is impending conflict. The time frame for completing the installation and training will depend on the situation in the country. We are following events closely.

2-Jun-22

by Karin Davies

The washer, dryer, autoclave and water softener have been installed. There was a problem with a missing part for the water softener that had to be ordered from Germany. Training of Biomedical staff in maintenance and repair of the equipment was completed. Training of laundry technicians and nurses who will operate the autoclave was completed. There was also training in the policies and procedures for the entire process from collection of the soiled instruments and drapes at point of use through cleaning, packaging, sterilizing, and return to the clinical units. The facility is now up and operating well. Currently we are working with our team in Gondar to monitor and collect data to measure the success of the project and to develop a QA program.

16-Dec-22

by Karin Davies

The Perinatal Central Processing and Sterilization facility has been completed and has been up and running. We have been working with our team in Gondar on Quality Assurance issues. There have been several problems with malfunction of the washing machine. Currently the Gondar team is working closely with the IMESA agent in Addis and with the technicians from IMESA Service Department in Italy to resolve the problems. Fortunately the machine is still under warranty and we hope to have the problems corrected soon.
