NEEDS: Over700 mostly rural Primary schools in our education District practise multigrade teaching i.e. up to 4 grades are taught simultaneously by one teacher in one classroom. This means that a teacher, each day has to prepare lessons four 4 grades in up to 5 subjects i.e. 20 lesson preparations. For obvious reasons, only the brightest pupils can cope with such distracted learning. One of the outcomes of the problem is a serious weakness in the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). The root of the problem has been identified as deficient teaching in multigrade Primary schools.
ACTION IN PROGRESS:The Provincial Department of Education (DOE) has invited two Rotaians to sit on a committee to improve the situation because both the Rotarians were involved in Rotary sponsored interventions both in Primary and High Schools with marked success by providing video lessons and viewing equipment to schools.
It was decided to carry out a pilot program by supplying monitors and video lessons to test their effectiveness. The results of pilot program in 10 schools have shown that we can engage learners with curriculum based video lessons while at the same time, the teacher can teach another grade in a different subject formally. The teachers have embraced the system.
PROJECT FUNDS DISBURSEMENT: The main cost of the program is the purchase of TV sets and the data storage devices containing the lessons and a trasining program for the teachers.
CLUB MEMBERS INVOLVEMENT: Many of our club members will be involved in distributing TVs to the schools and ensuring that the teachers understand how to use the technology and ensuring the safe keeping of equipment.
PROJECT TIMELINE: As soon as the funding of the project is assured, a Global Grant application will be submitted to begin implementation in the first local school term i.e. 2020.
A feature of this project is that we have established a per learner budget of about $11 per learner. This application is targetting $40,000 or about 3,600 learners. There are about 28,000 affected learners in the education district. The only limiting factor to targetting more learners are the funds available. $11 more means another learner.
