Region: Africa

Country: Nigeria

Location: Bayelsa state

Total Budget: $52,894

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

10 deep borehole relatively free from any form of contamination, safe for drinking with each having a 20feet tank stand, holding four numbers of 1,500 litres tanks(a total of 6,000 litres). in addition are two separate tanks of 2,000litres and 3,000 litres for water treatments.

The project will constitute a six stand taps per project site for easy access by users propelled by a durable submersible and surface water pumps. The project will be powered by both public power and generator set.

The outcome of our clubs feasibility study in five local government area in Bayelsa state- SWALI community(we are proposing 2 boreholes) in Yenagoa Local Government area,Okolobiri in southern Ijaw local government area(2 boreholes) in odi community , National youth service (NYSC)camp in kaiama, both in kolokuma /opokuma local government area(3boles:1borehole in NYSC CAMP AND 2 IN STRATEGIC LOCATIONS IN THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT), college of education Sagbama, Sagbama local government area(2 BOREHOLES WITHIN THE CAMPUS) and Iminrigin Ogbia local government area(2 BOREHOLES) Shows a very significant lack of good water supply. while we are constrained by finance our choice for vulnerable age group was made- schools student. These schools/community has toilet facilities that has been rendered unusable due to lack of water. The fear of disease outbreak , injuries to student while using the nearby bushes, distraction to their academic works and possible harm by wild animals justified our choice of this project in these localities.

Provision of safe water is one of Rotary international area of focus. safe water is indeed targeted at improving lives, sanitation and hygiene. Aside the provision of water , the project will also create awareness, teach and expose the community leaders on solving emerging and subsequent water challenges and expose the community to Rotary international huge investment in training of high minded individual in studies of water, sanitation and hygiene. The project is sustainable hence it is the need of the community after a feasibility study was done.

The club will establish a Rotary Community Corp to protect and manage the projects after completion. Aside that, the club will equally conduct a training for the corps, some community leaders ,heads of school and student.

Our club ,intends the participation of Rotarian to reduce cost of the project, reduce interference from hoodlums in the flow of the project. We intend to have two Rotarian each day onsite actively spending four hours spanning fourteen days of the project execution.

Finally on the day of the project handover, we intend to ensure that 40 of our club members attend in a fanfare which will create awareness of the good works of Rotary, engage members more and the event will be estimated for 2 hours for each project.
