Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: Tiruchengode

Total Budget: $105,500

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Need - The town generates 29 tons of waste every day. After composting and segregating the recyclable waste, 7 tons of waste remains as refusal, which need to be safely disposed of every day. These waste refusals are dumped in open space and are burnt in the open air. This spoils the environment, contaminates the water and pollutes the air, which results in a health hazard for the surrounding community and the health workers.

Objective - To help to dispose of the solid waste-refusal in a safe, scientific and non-hazardous way. And by that save the environment, groundwater and air; and also protect the public and sanitary workers from water contamination, air pollution and diseases.

Description of the project - This project will install Incinerator, air-pollution control unit, 30-meter height emission chimney, shredder, automated waste feeder, and conveyor system.

Outcome and the impact - More than 1,000 families and 20-30 health workers will be benefitted and their health will improve. Environment will be saved, water will be protected from contamination and the air will be un-polluted.

Sustainability - Tiruchengode Municipality has agreed to provide enough space to install the equipment, to take over the equipment and run and maintain them at their own cost. MOU will be entered into. It has enough tax revenue and government allocations to meet the recurring and maintenance expenses. Residue of the burnt waste refusal - ashes - will be sold to many of the ash brick manufacturers around.

The project will be completed before the end of June 2021.

The project funds will be used to install the equipment.

Members will identify proper equipment, proper place to install, negotiate and finalize the equipment, oversee its installation, ensure proper training, monitor the functioning and evaluate.

This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
