Two communities in El Salvador, El Pital and Las Tablas, currently have limited access to water which relies on community access to an open spring. Dynamic weather conditions, like droughts and periodic heavy rains (which erode the land around the spring), make it an unreliable and insecure source of water for the communities involved. The current open storage negatively impacts the cleanliness of the available water, and the poor distribution means that the water is not consistently available.
The goal of this project is to provide an easily-maintained and sustainable supply of clean and safe water distributed to each household.
The proposed solution consists of a well and a pump to access reliable water from an aquifer, a storage tank that will be located above the communities (for gravity feed), a transmission line between the well and the tank, and a distribution system to get the water from the tank to each house. The water supplied will be disinfected by chlorination. The electric pump will ensure that the storage tank is kept full. The gravity-driven distribution system will provide a more consistent and regular supply of household-level water access to homes in both communities. The closed system, disinfected water, and reliable distribution ensures a much safer source of potable water for all involved.
The communities will participate in the installation of the well and in the ongoing operation. Community members will provide labor, including digging trenches for the distribution system, and supporting the US crew implementing the system. Through monthly payments by the community members served, the ongoing expenses (electricity and chlorination) will be covered, as well as building a fund for larger repairs.
