Baja California, Mexico, is experiencing an epidemic of a severe and potentially fatal tickborne disease known as Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). 46 RMSF deaths, primarily in children were reported in Baja CA from 2020-22. This bacterial disease is spread by ticks prevalent among dogs in and around homes in poor barrios. We will work with the Baja California Health Department (ISESALUD) Baja California and municipal health jurisdictions including Ensenada, Mexicali, Tijuana,and San Quintin to purchase and apply about 2,000 Seresto long-acting insecticidal dog collars in hot spots with RMSF cases, an intervention which has been documented to help reduce dog tick infestations and RMSF cases and deaths in Arizona and Sonora, Mexico. The intervention will begin in San Quintin, the smallest community. ISESALUD and partners will monitor project indicators, no. of collars applied, households educated, reduction in dog tick infestation and RMSF cases.
