Eco-friendly Stove project in Nicaragua was started 4 years ago by the Rotary Clubs of Stratford and Hyde Park London Ontario Canada under the Rotary Club of Stratford COMMIT Mission group(webpage "commitwithnphnicaragua.simplesite.com") We observed open fire cooking in enclosed areas in the villages where we worked. which was both environmentally detrimental and a health hazard to mothers and children primarily doing the cooking. We did a pilot project in the area with 5 stoves and received both positive feedback and 100% request for the stoves. We partnered with Stove Team International(www.stoveteam.org) and adopted the ecofriendly Justa stove with proven technology and metrics to show at least 50% reduction in GHG and additional safety from burns, and polluted air since it has a stack venting to outside. We got permission from the local government and also partnered with host Rotary Club of Granada. We combined this with a tree planting program to replace the biomass wood that we use. Each recipient pays $5 USD of the total cost of $150 USD which is put in a contingency fund for future repairs. Stove committees locally will be formed. The life of the stove is decades with metal component life of 7+ years. We did a bikeathon across Canada to raise money for the project and it was well received.
Our Global Grant was turned down because of political instability in Nicaragua but we have started the project, are able to functional well in the area with the cooperation of the government and hope to build 200 stoves as originally planned and pledged. However our goal was 1000 stoves in the area . All partners are still on board for the project and we are looking for matching grants to carry on the project for the next Rotary year.Glad to present our project by Power Point to any club interested.
