Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Kenya

Location: Migori

Total Budget: $48,780

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

The 200,000 people in the capital of Migori county have little or no access to books and limited access to the internet due to the high cost of internet access. If a school has a library, which many do not, it is poorly stocked with books. Even if people can afford to buy books, there are no bookstores in Migori.

This project will provide access to books for everyone by creating a public library in Migori Town.

In this partnership, the National Government will provide the building, bookshelves, desks and other furniture, Migori County government will provide the permanent staff and training. Rotary will provide approximately 70,000 books, computers, a circulation system, public outreach and some of the furniture. The books will come from Books for the World, a Rotary affiliated organization based in Texas.

An important part of this project is to create public awareness of what a lending library is and how it functions. Most of us started using a lending library when we were in primary school. Most people in Migori have never seen a library, let alone used one. There will need to be significant public outreach and education for people about the basic functions of a library; how to get and use a library card; responsibilities for loaned material; using a computer in a public space, etc. The training will be done by library staff and outside consultants. This grant will fund some of that training.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
