Project Description

Region: Central America

Country: Nicaragua

Location: Ciudad Sandino

Total Budget: $40,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

We recently completed a Global Grant whereby we installed 50 aquaponics systems into families' backyards in both rural and urban settings, as well as at 12 schools. The systems provide families and schoolchildren with nutritious fresh fish and vegetables. They consist of tilapia fish tanks from which the waste water is fed by gravity into grow beds where plants, such as mint and celery, thrive. The water is filtered through their roots and is then pumped back into the fish tanks. The project was so successful that there is now a waiting list of 60 families or schools wanting these systems which we plan to provide through this Global Grant.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
