Project Description Region: Western Europe Country: UK, Indonesia Location: Oxford Total Budget: $36,768 Area of Focus: The environment My Master of Science (MSc) graduate program in primate conservation from Oxford Brookes University will train me in the way humans interact with orangutans. I will be considering their environmental decline and habitat loss, captive management and translocations, and genetics and population management. My goal is to explore the best management practices for humans involved with the protection of this endangered species on Sumatra, and wherever possible, find natural reserves for their protection, and for their management when they come into conflict with humans who are ever encroaching on their territory. Three months of my year-long program will take place at Leuser and West Toba, on Sumatra, Indonesia. My research will focus on community-based conservation efforts of humans with orangutans. I will be collaborating with the Sumatran Orangutan Society and the Orangutan Foundation, UK , who focus on the Kalimantan populations. The beneficiaries will be local communities inhabiting orangutan edge habitats, wild orangutans, and orangutan natural habitats. I will be presenting some of my preliminary findings at the Rotary International Convention in Singapore, to an audience of several hundred Rotarians interested in endangered species and human-wildlife conflict.
