WAKAM SUMMARY
(Acronym for Western Alliance of Kenya Against Malaria)
Malaria is the deadliest disease in the history of mankind. It is both preventable and treatable, and has the ability to be eliminated in our lifetime. Our project will benefit every Western Kenyan citizen. We are building the WAKAM Rotary Global Grant to reduce malaria (and head towards elimination) for millions of inhabitants in this region, especially children, pregnant women and vulnerable populations.
There are numerous rotary clubs in Western Kenya ready to employ our current toolbox against malaria, and we will model our program from the current Program of Scale in Zambia. We will concentrate most of the program around training and equipping Community Health Promoters (CHPs) who will improve healthcare access in rural settings. Our extended vision includes multiple partnerships with rotarians around the globe, who will provide much of the support for this endeavor. This sustainable project will improve maternal and child health, environment, and education, as we positively impact a significant global problem.
WAKAM MISSION
* Empower and build self-reliance in local healthcare systems, to improve access to care, especially for children, pregnant women and vulnerable populations
* Educate and re-educate CHPs in malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment
* Retrain and equip current CHP teams and add new CHP teams
* Fill gaps in net distribution and use, and improve vector control
* Improve communication skills to empower CHPs to be health advocates and better data collectors
* Educate rotarians and our multiple stakeholders on the value of eradicating malaria
* Partner with health authorities to make Kenya safer for all, for decades to come!
OUR MOVING PARTS
The international sponsors (donor side) will both fund and support this project as a district-based consortium from 20 rotary districts. These districts will be collecting funds, educating and raising awareness among rotarians and non-rotarians. The 20 districts will each establish a work group that will propel the project ahead over the 2 year project length. Each of the 20 district work groups will be partnered with a host club in Western Kenya and will have regular communications and zoom calls to be sure all aspects of the program are being implemented properly.
On the recipient side there will be up to 20 Western Kenyan host clubs and each club will be responsible for the following 10 roles and responsibilities. These following items will have oversight from the partner donor district work groups:
1- perform grant oversight at all levels in the geographical area covered
2- manage disbursements for the affiliated district health offices, vendors and reimbursements
3- prepare ongoing oversight of financial records and prepare for audits
4- conserve records of all project activities and correspondence
5- schedule and pay expenses and lodging for CHPs during their training sessions
6- purchase heavy duty 5yr guaranteed bicycles and required uniforms and equipment for each CHP
7- participate in CHP training sessions and "graduation program"
8- aid the District Health personnel to provide the CHPs with appropriate commodities
9- confirm all CHPs have updated materials for community sensitization
10-prepare interim and final reports to meet reporting requirements for the grant
The lead club in Kenya, the Rotary Club of Kakamega, will receive and manage the grant funds. Each of the 20 host rotary clubs in Western Kenya will partner with a district work group from the international sponsors, thus assuring prudent fiscal management. The funds will be in a single bank account, disbursed by the treasurer, from the lead club in Kakamega, Kenya.
This grant is supported by RAM-GLOBAL RAG (Rotarians Against Malaria-Global Rotary Action Group) as a critical RI affiliated organization working to reduce and eliminate malaria. The group has a large reach with its newsletter going out to over 5000 members in about 100 countries. The RAM-G network brings grassroots activity to this partnership of 20 host districts and 20 clubs in Kenya in this multi-regional grant.
