Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Colombia

Location: Neiva, Huila

Total Budget: $44,567

Area of Focus: The environment

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

1 Expand the flora and fauna protection zone of the Siberia Ceibas Regional Natural Park, adjacent to the Las Ceibas River basin, reforesting with native honey species (1,600 trees per hectare) an area of 20 hectares (49,420 Acres), donated by the municipality of Neiva. A total of 32,000 trees will be planted.

2 Create a privileged habitat in a reserve area, for the reproduction and conservation of bees, threatened by the indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides, deforestation, and climate change, in a global context of extinction of the specie.

3 Contribute to the conservation of the Las Ceibas River basin, source of the aqueduct for the 400,000 inhabitants of the city of Neiva.

4 A study by the AQUAE Foundation proves that a tree releases between 10 and 30 kilograms of Carbon Dioxide in one year. The 32.000 trees in our proyect, will eliminate 480 tons/year of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. (15 kilograms each tree).

5 Train the community on the topics of : Environmental conservation in reserve areas, Waste disposal , Conservation of water sources and Climate change. The Environment Secretariat of the Mayor of Neiva will carry out 4 days of training and recreational activities aimed mainly at women and children in the community.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The ecological restoration project is the result of an alliance between the community living in the area of influence, the Mayor's Office of Neiva, the Regional Corporation of Alto Magdalena CAM and the Rotary clubs Neiva Las Ceibas and Rotaract Neiva Las Ceibas. The project is located on the properties La Colonia, La Plata village (6 hectares), La Esmeralda, Pueblo Nuevo village (4 hectares), and La Ondina, Motilón village (10 hectares).

The ecological restoration will be carried out with native honey species, planting 32,000 trees with a density of 1,600 trees per hectare. 100% of the unskilled labor for reforestation tasks will be hired in the area, giving priority to women. The qualified professional labor for the training, management, auditing, control and monitoring processes will be provided by the Mayor's Office of Neiva and the CAM, at no cost to the project. The project budget includes logistics for four days of training and recreational activities on environmental conservation, on the La Colonia farm, managed by the CAM, which will be in charge of the Environment Secretariat of the Mayor's Office of Neiva.

ATTENTION TO NEEDS

1 The execution of our RECONCILIATION WITH LIFE AND THE ENVIRONMENT project will address the problem of climate change and restore areas affected by the armed conflict that attacked the ecosystem for more than 40 years, planting 32,000 trees and guaranteeing the sustainability of reforestation.

2 Protection of an endangered species: 20 hectares planted with selected native honey species, under ideal environmental conditions in a reserve area in a Regional Natural Park, will offer a safe habitat for the reproduction and conservation of bees.

3 In the short term, reforestation contracts will offer job opportunities for more than a year to a population burdened by unemployment. Subsequently, the maintenance work of the reforested areas in charge of the CAM will also need labor from the region.

4 Community training on the conservation of the Siberia Ceibas ecosystem, on waste management, climate change and the conservation of water sources will be a priority to overcome an identified need and to guarantee the sustainability of the proyect.

BENEFICIARIES

1° The SIBERIA CEIBAS REGIONAL NATURAL PARK ecosystem. 2° The LAS CEIBAS River 3° Bees, an endangered species. 4° The community of the area, in conditions of multidimensional poverty.

INDIRECT BENEFICIARY

400,000 inhabitants of the city of Neiva depend on the Las Ceibas River for their water consumption.

SUSTAINABILITY

The sustainability of the project is guaranteed for the following reasons:

1 COMMUNITY COMMITMENT: The community's commitment to improve their standard of living through productive work and the conservation of a privileged ecosystem is established from the project formulation phase. The community was an active part of the formulation and structuring phases of the project, they are owners of ancestral knowledge about the conservation of the ecosystem and have more than 10 years of experience in reforestation processes in the Natural Park.

2 REGIONAL AUTONOMOUS CORPORATION OF ALTO MAGDALENA CAM: Participates as a Collaborating Organization. It is the state entity in charge of managing the Siberia Ceibas Regional Natural Park. They participated in the structuring of the project and will supervise the reforestation contracts, technical specifications and control of results free of charge. Once the reforestations are established, the CAM technical team will continue monitoring them and will assume the maintenance costs of the plantations, guaranteeing their sustainability. The La Colonia farm, managed by CAM, located in the area, will be the operational headquarters without costs for the project.

3 MAYOR OF NEIVA: Participates as a Collaborating Organization. The project development area is located on 20 hectares donated by the municipality of Neiva. They participated in the structuring of the project. The technical team of the Ministry of the Environment will be in charge of training the community for one year on the scope of the project, Conservation of water sources, Waste Management and Conservation of the environment in reserve areas.

4 The presence of the NEIVA LAS CEIBAS ROTARY CLUB as project leader, with the support of the CAM, and the Neiva Mayor's Office as collaborating organizations, it guarantees the continuous monitoring of the progress of the project by professional technical teams, the permanent evaluation of compliance with the objectives, and the good management of resources.

This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
