Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Colombia

Location: Manizales

Total Budget: $33,248

Area of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

Promote protective and self-care factors, providing knowledge and access to care routes to prevent

sexual abuse in children and adolescents, through artistic and training strategies, involving teachers

and parents/caregivers in 10 educational institutions of Manizales per year.

Specific objectives

I. Carry out an artistic educational strategy aimed at children and adolescents from transition to fifth

grade in prioritized educational institutions, to promote their rights, self-care, protective factors and

care routes.

II. Build a training methodology for teachers and parents/caregivers of impacted children and

adolescents, to identify warning signs and risk factors, so that they can act as protective agents against

sexual abuse.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The ''Butterfly Route'' is a program that aims to prevent sexual violence in children and adolescents

in educational institutions, child development centers and vulnerable communities through the

promotion of self-care, the factors protectors and care routes.

The ''Butterfly Route'' is made up of five stages, each designed to provide a unique and memorable

educational experience through artistic and cultural interventions.

• IntegrARTE: Cultural and community integration exhibition.

• CuidARTE: Stage of prevention of sexual violence through different artistic strategies such as the

play ''Fresita y la Mano'', puppets and stories.

• EmonioARTE: Ecology of the body, dance sample and body expression workshop.

• SanARTE: Human cartographies workshop and coaching workshop aimed at the transformation of

the being.

• EmpoderARTE: Sculpture workshop, music workshop and creation of an artistic mural.

In addition, it has training workshops for the prevention of this violence with educators and

parents/caregivers. The cases that can possibly be identified in each of the stages are referred for the

appropriate activation of the care routes, monitoring them.

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHAT NEEDS YOU IDENTIFY? HOW WILL THE PROJECT MEET

THESE NEEDS? WHO WILL BE THE BENEFICIARY OF THIS PROJECT? CITE AN

ESTIMATED NUMBER OF BENEFICIARIES.

Identified Needs: According to the INMLCF, for the year 2022 in Manizales, there was a rate of 0.46

(209 cases) for alleged sexual crimes against children and adolescents. In 87.1% of the cases, the type

of sexual violence reported was sexual abuse. 79% of the cases occurred within the municipal seat.

Regarding the relationship with the aggressors, in 53.1% of the cases the aggressor was a family

member, of these 28.8% was the stepfather and 17.1% cases corresponded to the father or uncle in

equal proportion. The conditions of the event varied, with 52.1% cases occurring during personal care

activities and 28.2% cases being related to travel from one place to another. The place where the most

cases occur is housing, with 52%, followed by educational institutions with 6.7%.

Of the total cases, 24.8% correspond to boys and girls in initial or preschool/transition education,

47.8% to basic primary education, 12.9% to adolescents in basic secondary education and 5.7% to

middle secondary education.

The identification of the alarming statistics of sexual violence against children and adolescents in

Manizales reveals an urgent need to address this problem, especially in the stages of initial education

such as transition and in primary school.

The project will mainly benefit children and adolescents, as well as teachers and parents in at least 10

educational institutions, 10 child development centers and 3 vulnerable communities per year. This

is equivalent to about 2,000 children, 80 teachers and 1,000 parents. Indirect beneficiaries include

educational institutions, teachers, the ICBF and the community in general.

SUSTAINABILITY:

The sustainability of the "Butterfly Route" is based on strategic collaborations with government,

educational institutions and local organizations, which ensures long-term support. Professionals have

been trained to lead the project, guaranteeing human resources and specialized knowledge.

The integration of the project into the regulatory framework of the Action Plan of the Articulating

Mechanisms strengthens its sustainability. Additionally, it seeks to generate cultural change and

awareness about sexual violence in the community.

The flexibility and scalability of the project allow its replication in different contexts and the

possibility of establishing alliances with local institutions, private schools and companies. This opens

opportunities to expand the initiative to new geographic areas and prevent sexual violence in children

and adolescents in various communities.

IS THE COMMUNITY INVOLVED? DESCRIBE THE ROLE OF THE LOCAL

COMMUNITY IN THE IMPLEMENTATION AND CONTINUITY OF THE PROJECT.

The 'Butterfly Route' stands out for its active collaboration with professionals from educational

institutions that work directly with children and adolescents, allowing the strategies to be effective

and relevant for the beneficiaries. Additionally, it responds directly to the alarming figures of sexual

violence and addresses barriers to understanding, ensuring its accessibility.

The methodology is based on extensive studies and is carefully adapted to the local context to increase

its effectiveness. It prioritizes the fulfillment of objectives and focuses on long-term sustainability,

training the educational community and local leaders to act as project facilitators.

The 'Butterfly Route' undergoes continuous evaluation, valuing feedback from the community. This

participatory and responsive approach ensures that the program remains effective and relevant to the

changing needs of the community, promoting a sense of shared ownership in its continued success.
