Every day, at the National Maternal Perinatal Institute (INMP) in Lima, Peru, 35 babies are born who are the fruit of their parents' love and hope. But not all of them have the same opportunity to live and grow up healthy, as many are premature or suffer from a life-threatening illness. These little angels need all our help, and the best way to give it to them is with breast milk, the most complete and natural food that exists. The INMP has the first Human Milk Bank in the country, which receives, processes and distributes milk donated by caring mothers who want to share their blessing with other babies in need. The milk, after being pasteurized, is stored in reusable glass jars, but which require a careful process of washing, drying and sterilization. This process is done manually, which involves a lot of effort and a high risk of contamination. 1500 jars are processed daily, by hand. For this reason, this project aims to purchase a hospital washer-sterilizer for glass milk bottles, which will ensure that the 1,500 bottles used every day are delivered to babies in perfect conditions of hygiene and quality. This will protect the health of newborns and reduce infections and complications. For the year 2022, 27,383 preterm births were reported, which represents an increase of 0.10% compared to the same period in 2021. In addition, there have been 1898 neonatal deaths, of which 67.6% were due to prematurity or complications related to prematurity. These figures show us the urgency of improving the care and attention of our country's most vulnerable babies. This project is an initiative of RC Monterrico Surco, a local club from the city of Lima - Peru, committed to the well-being of mothers and children in our country. We have already collaborated previously with the INMP, providing it with 7 multi-parameter monitors for the premature infant units. It is important to mention that the INMP, for its part, will be responsible for providing the permanent preventive maintenance required by the equipment, thus guaranteeing the sustainability of the project.
