Areas of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene, The environment
The remote village of Payorote, is located in the Amazon Forest of northern Peru near to the Maranon River - a headwater of the Amazon River. There are 240 people living in 50 households. This village is flooded by the river, nearly annually for weeks at a time. Due to the nature of the river flooding, and near daily tropical rainfall, pit latrines are not built or utilized by the villagers. The villagers practice practice open defecation resulting very in high incidents of water related illness including diarrhea and gastric parasitic infections.
In 2022-2023, the government installed raised composting toilets for each of the village households. However, the villagers refused to use the composting toilets due to odor and flies. They use these latrine structures to capture rainwater for drinking water, bathing and general household cleaning. They do not use the latrines for urination or defecation.
This project intends to add a pour-flush toilet to the latrines and install a household wastewater treatment system that will 1) function even during the weeks-long flood conditions, and 2) have an underground effluent discharge quality, within ten meters of the latrine, that meets or exceeds swimming water quality standards.
This project intends to utilize the 50 latrine superstructures and replace the composting style toilets with pour-flush toilets. The toilet wastewater will be treated before being discharged underground in a primary underground septic tank designed for 9-days of residence time and then a secondary underground tank that will incorporate a homemade bio-reactor. The design will not require electricity and operates via gravity.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
