Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Peru

Location: Ucayali

Total Budget: $105,163

Area of Focus: Community economic development

In the Caserío Nuevo Ucayali in the Amazon Rainforest, there is a Group of 40 Women dedicated to agriculture who have been being mistreated socially, economically, physically and sexually violated by their partners due to poverty in their homes. Six years ago, these women formed an Association to help each other and work the cocoa from their crops, transform it into chocolate, sell it and thus help in their home for the well-being of their children and family. Each of them contributes 2 hectares of cocoa to the Association, making a total of 80 hectares with 01 hectare in production. They make chocolate by hand because they do not have machinery, they roast it with firewood by cutting down the trees, but the smoke causes damage to their lungs and pollutes the environment. In order to offer quality products, they rent machinery which greatly reduces their profits. Today, they ask us for help to acquire machinery and equipment for a Cocoa Processing Plant to manufacture pure organic 100% cocoa paste and its derivatives, chocolates, liqueurs, butter and cocoa powder to sustain their economic expenses and achieve their empowerment and social inclusion.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
