Nakivale Refugee Settlement is sized at approximately 72 km2
and is hosting over 138,140 refugees
from countries with conflicts such as Burundi, Eritrea, Ethiopia, DRC Congo, Rwanda, Kenya,
Somalia, Sudan, and Southern Sudan according to Uganda Refugee Statistics (2022).
The Rotary Club of Mbarara East received a request from the management of GENTIL
FOUNDATION CHARITY/ ORPHANS CARE which is a Community-Based Organization located in
Nakivale refugee settlement, Misiera A village, Rubondo for support to economically empower
the community in and around their village in the camp.
In response, the club projects committee was tasked by the Club Board to visit the community
and conduct a needs assessment to ascertain the magnitude of need and the status quo.
During the needs assessment exercise, it was established that following the settlement of
community members, there is a high level of poverty as few sampled individuals from four villages
could not meet the basic needs such as food, shelter, education, medication, and clothing. This
ultimately led to famine, diseases, death, and conflicts among the community members.
It is against this background that the club seeks partners for the economic empowerment project
that is envisaged to solve the problem at hand. The project funds will be used to achieve the following Objectives:i) To equip the training center with solar and manual-powered sewing machines.
ii) To train the targeted community members in the operation and maintenance of sewing
machines.
iii) To provide the trainees with financial literacy
iv) To train community members in peacebuilding and conflict resolutions to effectively be
self-reliant
