Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: Bangladesh

Location: Sujanagar, Pabna

Total Budget: $50,000

Areas of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene, Basic education and literacy

RC Gulshan Lake City is working with a rural community and wishes to help mainly the poor farming community improve their human capital through better education and improve their quality of life.

Kashimnagar Sreepur is a remotely located village, which remains under water for about 5-6 months. The villagers are poor as they depend mainly on single crop a year, though two crops are raised in some of the favourable years. About 30% of households are below poverty level and 40% are barely above the poverty level. Even the 3-4% so-called rich (by the villagers standards) households are not really rich. Resultant poverty prohibits the farmers send all of their children to schools, the girls suffer the most. Further, availability of safe and clean drinking water is a chronic problem. A recent attempt to solve the problem is not working due to lack of training maintenance and management and lack to funds to reach about 60% of the households. The villagers also lack proper sanitation as many households still use open pit toilets.

The project will, therefore, attempt to assist the communities in improving the facilities and quality of education of the newly established high school for girls, which has a primary section as well. The project will also strengthen the community initiative of piped clean water by training them on the operation, maintenance and management, giving them water meters to avoid misuse so that the initiative remains commercially sustainable, giving additional pipes so that all households will have access to clean water and construct about 20 sanitary toilets.

T

The project will be implemented over a period of one year by RC Gulshan Lake City in partnership with the local Rotary Community Corps (RCC) and the community. There is commubity managed committee to run the school and another committee to run the water and sanitation. The RCC is deeply involved with the committees. About 10-12 of the Rotary club members will participate in various phases of the project. The project will link up with relevant government and non-government organizations.

Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
