The intended beneficiaries are school children numbering over 4,000 in ten Primary schools. The project area is West of Mityana of Mityana Mubende Highway on average 40 kilometres from Mityana Municipality.

School buildings are not protected against lightning yet this area has proven very prone to this menace. The schools also lack hand washing facilities which also threatens the lives of these children through communicable diseases.

3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The need for lightning protection has not had any action due to the financial implications. The schools do

not have necessary funds

Section C: Activity Description

1. Summarize the proposed activity(ies) in 250 words or less, including the need it will address, the intended beneficiary(ies), and the potential benefits to the community.

There are three components of this project namely lightning protection, provision of hand washing facilities and sensitization of children and residents of the lightning threat and benefits of hand washing. Schools to benefit have been assessed.

Lightning arrestors will be secured. Identified buildings, giving maximum protection, will be fitted with lightning arrestors. The schools will therefore become safe to the children since the lightning threat will have been removed. School enrollment will rise since parents will now feel that their children will be safe at school.

For hand washing, rainwater gutters will be fixed to the identified building, a water storage tank supplied and installed. Connection to a hand washing facility / station will be made.

These facilities will when used lead to reduction of hand washing related diseases.

Trainings will be carried out for the communities to reduce the risks of lightning and to encourage them to practice hand washing.

The community will carry out mobilization or publicity of the project by informing their forks about it and attend trainings.

Some will provide supplies to the unit. The community members will provide the children to the schools.

School management committee will ensure safety of all installations.

Yes. School management committees confirmed this during our tour of the area.the community was very pleased with the proposal.

Disease prevention and treatment will be address since hand washing will definitely lead to reduction / elimination of occurrence of hygiene related diseases.

The primary benificiaries are children who will be encouraged to enroll for studies in a safe atmosphere and this will greatly contribute to basic education and literacy levels.

Section E: Project Outcomes

1. What will be the immediate and long-term outcomes of the activity(ies).

There will be an immediate elimination of death or injury resulting from lightning striking schools. The long term effect will be increased enrollment and therefore rise in literacy levels as more children attend schools. The sensitized communities will also know how to avoid lightning effect or how to handle such cases. This will lead to happy and more productive communities.

2. Explain how all involved parties will act to ensure the sustainability of the activity(ies) and/or outcomes.

Both Lightning and hand washing installations only need to be protected from burglars and management committees have committed themselves to address this.

Management committee have also promised proper use of hand washing facilities and repairing of any damaging which may occur to them.

Training in management in installation use will ensure that Management is set for see long life of these installations.
