The population located in Tecate Mexico and San Jose los Cabos, Baja Mexico afflicted with residual craniofacial and articulation disorders will be the direct beneficiaries. Future patients currently treated by the Hospitals who will outgrow their free benefits before obtaining final reconstructive results will also benefit. There are an estimated population in the regions over 100,000 suffering with articulation disorders affiliated with Cranio-Skeleto-facial or cleft dental disorders.

Local Clinicians and Rotarian Professionals were all involved in the planning of the project and are on-board with the implementation plan with their individual and collective participation. Private Practice as well as Institutional Clinicians are all involved in order to provide their professional community with this enhancement for patient care.

3. How are these needs currently being addressed with local resources and/or government agencies, NGOs, etc.? If the activity is a scholarship, enter "N/A".

The community has a Hospital System which treats patients only up until the age of 17. After this, there are no current clinics designed specifically to address the Craniofacial and Articulation Disorders afflicted population. Occasional treatments are provided by the Social Security health care system, but currently there is a lack of trained expertise for this affliction and the professional community is requesting assistance in augmentation of the education and treatment opportunities.

Section C: Activity Description

1. Summarize the proposed activity(ies) in 250 words or less, including the need it will address, the intended beneficiary(ies), and the potential benefits to the community.

Patients who have not been able to obtain treatment for their Skeleto-Craniofacial Articulation disorders will now be able to obtain their care on a longitudinal and sustainable basis. Clinicians based in both the fields of Dentistry and Medicine who practice at various hospitals and clinics around Baja Norte,Tecate and the San Jose Los Cabos, Baja Sur, Mexico regions in Mexico have all indicated that currently there are no treatments available to these patients and no training available for the doctors to help as well.

Patients having advanced and debilitating conditions will need this grant project to be able to obtain necessary speech-language pathologies treated via endoscopic enhanced therapy, facial-Skeletal surgery, release of jaw ankylosis and further reconstructive facial procedures such as Cranio-Orthognathic reconstructions. This grant will allow them to have access for this care via Internationally renowned specialists who will educate the local clinicians in the techniques, and to have sustainable care provided by the ongoing professional of the community who participate with this program’s charitable and educational clinic.

Patients having advanced and debilitating conditions will need this grant project to be able to obtain total joint replacement surgery, release of total jaw ankylosis and further reconstructive facial procedures such as Cranio-Orthognathic reconstructions. This grant will allow them to have access for this care via Internationally renowned specialists who will educate the local clinicians in the techniques, and still be able to have sustainable care provided by the ongoing educational University of Latina efforts associated with this charitable and educational clinic.

The local Rotary Clubs will participate with promotion of the treatment clinics for patient notification to the population as well as notification of the Medical/Dental professionals of the symposium dates and will handle registrations. They will also work with the patients for their local housing and food arrangements should inadequate financial resources exist.

4. Has the benefiting community(ies) confirmed that it would like the activity(ies) to take place?

Yes, the overwhelming response from the Medical/Dental communities as well as patients already waiting for care has been positive. Additionally, the educational community as well as the local Rotarians are very supportive and ready to implement when the equipment delivery and educational symposium dates are confirmed.

Installation of the specialized surgical equipment and the professional demonstrations and education of the local professional surgeons in the usage with patient care will give hands-on advanced enhancement of the level of corrective care for these patients.

With the added benefit of ongoing affiliations with the professionals in the community and Rotary Clubs of the region, further opportunity exists for advanced surgical symposiums directed to the charitable treatment of these patients throughout the years to come.

Section E: Project Outcomes

1. What will be the immediate and long-term outcomes of the activity(ies).

Immediate Outcome: Specialty Craniofacial and Articulation treatment clinics for advance stage diseases will be established for charitable treatment of patients with these debilitating disorders.

Long term Outcome: Advanced training and education will provide local clinicians with means for sustainable continuation of the use of the clinic for treatment staging and management of the population with these disorders for years to come.
