Karen C Primary School is located in Langata Constituency in Langata within Nairobi County in Kenya. Karen C is a Mixed, Day only school. The school is sponsored by the Local Government Authority but not funded fully with the Government budget. The total population as at 1300 ( girls and boys). The school has 28 teachers giving it a teacher to pupil ratio of 1:40; School enrolment has remained high over the past 10 years. Pupils are mainly drawn from surrounding low income or informal settlements of Kuwinda, Kware and as far as Ongata Rongai and Bulbul in Ngong and nearby Children’s Orphanages and charitable homes such as Childrens homes for orphans. For the low income families, it is school of choice and within an access area where they do not need to pay for transport. The School provides subsidized lunch for the orphans and it has enough classrooms and field to play. The school has 2 committees that are operational: A Parent Teacher Association (PTA) with 22 members and a school board of management with 14 members approved by the Government for management purpose. The time of this review, the school had received a new head teacher. The School compound houses a community borehole that serves the entire Karen Community, Recently, through a global grant from the Rotary Foundation, two high level with high capacity water was installed to supply water to the end users. The school has pit (holed) latrines. A recent visit by Teachers from Dubai brought a lot of limelight to the School with a hope of partnership with the neighbor High Class – Hillcrest Schools. This has not materialized. The immediate neighborhood is a poor resource area of Kuwinda http://rotaryclubofkaren.org/blog/kuwinda-world-opportunity/that has over 2,000 poor residents. An RCC was formed to help with clean up. Rotary club of Karen , D9212 and Rotary Club of Woodland ,D5160 have proposed to fund phase ll project, BUILDING TOILETS FOR THE SCHOOL.

This resulted from a very successful implementation of a grant for phase l. We are therefore seeking your partnership on a Rotary Global Grant. 1.Sufficient Toilets for 1,300 children (Boys and Girls)

The School has pit ( Holed) toilets that are not sufficient for the children and the population of the School.

The project will involve, Construction of Toilets, Train on hygiene and health, Install septic tank for use by 1,300 students and their 28 teachers will benefit directly, over 3,000 community members will tap from the supply of the water for their domestic use and sustainable agriculture.

The parents will provide additional labour when required and security of the materials used.

The toilets will provide safe defecation, a healthy environment and waste management. Training will provide knowledge to good health and ultimately the children will improve in their esteem, performance and general good health.
