Surgeries will be provided for a minimum of 50 children each year suffering from cardiac disease. They will be selected from the most impoverished areas of Egypt where there is currently no care available for them. Which area of focus will this project support?

Humanitarian Projects - Project Planning Describe the community needs that your project will address. In Egypt, the rate of patients diagnosed with congenital heart disease is approximately 8/1000 living births. This translates to 15,000-16,000 babies born annually with a congenital heart defect. 50% or 8000 need corrective heart surgery within their first year of life. The current Egyptian healthcare system is only able to provide care to 1/2 of these children. The remaining 4000 ultimately perish. Many areas in Egypt have no access to pediatric cardiac care. They are among the poorest areas in the country with no available resources and are forced to live with no hope for their children. Surgeons will reach out to the children in these areas for screening , and diagnoses and select 50 for treatment at Cairo University Hospital. Once they undergo their lifesaving surgeries, they will be able to resume a normal life . How did your project team identify these needs. The National Insurance Committee for Congenital Heart Disease has conducted the necessary research which this project will address. Dr. Shawky coordinates with this committee during the selection process. Additionally, during the screening and selection of patients in the past, it became very apparent how extensive the need was. Parents in these impoverished areas are unaware of the options available to them nor do they have the means to travel to Cairo. How were members of the benefiting community involved in finding solutions. Local Rotarians and healthcare professionals researched the need for children in Egypt with heart disease and designed a proposal on how to address these needs. Rotarians have provided transportation to the children and their parents during the previous global grant and will do so again to help ensure they receive the lifesaving treatment so desperately needed. How were community members involved in planning the project. Dr, Shawky and local Rotarians have worked together with local healthcare professionals and the hospital administration to research and strategize how best to implement the project. Humanitarian Projects - Project Implementation Summarize each step of your project's implementation.
Will you work in coordination with any related initiative in the community? If yes, briefly describe the other initiatives and how they relate to this project. If no, please explain. Gift of Life Egypt and the local Rotary Clubs have dedicated themselves to reduce the number of children on the waiting list in need of Pediatric Heart Surgery. How were these needs identified? This type of information was provided to parents during the previous global grant and proven to be very beneficial. What incentives (for example, monetary compensation, awards, certification, or publicity), will you use, if any, to encourage community members to participate in the project? N/A List any community members or community groups that will oversee the continuation of the project after grant-funded activities conclude.
