Modelling & the Dynamics of Infectious Diseases https://www.lshtm.ac.uk/media/43531 How does your educational, professional, or volunteer experience align with Rotary's goals in the selected area of focus? While in high school, I was a leader in student government and coordinated the Rotary Interact program. These experiences began my journey of leadership and thoughtful community service. I could not have imagined that these initial high school experiences would give me the tools and interests to pursue a career in public and global health. As a public health major at SU, I was fortunate to be able to take classes related to preventing and treating diseases as well as having extracurricular experiences that supplemented the coursework. These experiences align with several of Rotary’s goals for disease prevention and treatment: Improving the capacity of local health care professionals, promoting disease prevention and treatment programs that limit the spread of communicable diseases and reduce the incidence and effect of noncommunicable diseases, and strengthening health care systems. As an opioid overdose program assistant at a non-profit organization based in Syracuse, NY, I met with pharmacists around Upstate New York to educate them about a New York State overdose prevention program. We worked together to increase awareness about an overdose prevention drug and increase accessibility to all state residents. This program directly prevented and treated overdoses. It tackled health disparities and increased the capacity for local pharmacists and other health care professionals to make life saving drugs accessible to all. In addition to my public health work in the U.S., I was also able to work in public health settings and conduct research in Kenya. Our research examined the wealth trends in a rural Kenyan community. This work was important because it allowed us to better understand the socioeconomic challenges that households faced, including access to clean water and sanitation. Understanding how many households have access to clean sanitation and how that access changed over time is essential to creating impactful programs that prevent and treat diseases and result in positive health outcomes. On a professional level, I interned at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego, CA, to support health research on military personnel and their families. In continuation of my undergraduate work, I now work for a non-profit organization based in Washington D.C, the American Institutes for Research (AIR). AIR conducts research to inform evidence based policy implementation and technical assistance to improve health equity. I work as a project manager on stakeholder engagement health research projects. Incorporating patients and stakeholders in the research process allows for research outcomes to directly influence patients and health care providers. It empowers patients and clinicians to make better, more informed health care decisions and ultimately strengthens health care systems. These experiences combined with my theoretical public health courses have made me passionate about using evidence based practices to target the social factors that influence health outcomes and in preventing and treating diseases. This aligns with several of Rotary’s goals in disease prevention and treatment. What are your plans immediately after the scholarship period? Ultimately, I seek to be impactful and to be a resource for East African populations. While there are many avenues to support global health efforts in East Africa, I hope to implement and evaluate health programs that target the social determinants of health. Immediately upon graduating from the MSc program, I would hope to work for a global health nonprofit organization as a monitoring and evaluation officer, or a program officer. There are several organizations that focus on East African populations and in strengthening health care systems that I would be interested in working for, including PATH, CARE International and Population Services International. I believe that completing a MSc in Demography and Health at LSHTM will help support my professional growth and help make me a competitive candidate for these roles. How do your long-term professional goals align with Rotary's goals in the selected area of focus? Long term, I see myself working in senior leadership roles for agencies or nonprofit organizations that develop, implement, and evaluate health programs that target the social determinants of health for vulnerable populations. Specifically, I hope to use my Swahili skills and previous experience in Kenya to continue working with East African populations, either domestically or internationally. Socioeconomic factors such as income, access to transportation and education influence the ability to have positive health outcomes. Understanding and addressing those factors are essential for preventing and treating diseases which is a main focus of Rotary. Specific Rotary goals that I hope to support are increasing capacity of local health professionals and health systems while promoting health programs. This can be done through collaborative research, program development and evidence based evaluation, which I seek to support in my long-term professional goals.
