ROTARY INTERNATIONAL THRUST AREA FOR 2008/09 IS REDUCTION OF INFANT MORTALITY RATE AND THE THEME IS “MAKE DREAMS REAL”

SUBJECT: Proposal to set up a five bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Pune Municipal Corporation’s Dalvi Hospital in Shivajinagar, Pune, India.

DESCRIPTION: India has a high infant mortality rate (IMR) of 54 per 1000 births. Dalvi Hospital is a Pune Municipal Corporation Hospital run for the benefit of the needy and poor in the city of Pune, India. Treatment at this hospital is almost free of cost. This hospital is lacking medical facilities and equipment needed for basic effective neonatal intensive care treatment. The pediatric section of the hospital is being run by a charitable trust headed by a renowned medical couple, Dr Amita Phadnis (Pediatrician) and Dr Avinash Phadnis (Gynecologist). Both doctors are well known and established in their respective fields in Pune and have their own private hospitals. At Dalvi Hospital, they have delivered over 1000 babies (normal and caesarian) since September 2007, & this section treats about 100 outpatients daily. Currently neonatal cases are sent to the over-crowded government hospital at great risk to mother and infant. The doctor couple has been renovating and upgrading the pediatric section of Dalvi hospital and are in dire need of special equipment for the 5 bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to try and greatly reduce the infant mortality rate at this hospital. This NICU can be used for assisting other municipal corporation hospitals in Pune also for critical neonatal cases.

COST OF EQUIPMENT: See attached required list of equipment and pricing based on a minimum of three quotations including refurbished models. For a five- bed NICU the total cost is Rs. 2,605,625 (USD 53,176 at Rs 49=US$1.00). The existing professional staff would be well trained to handle the equipment and the maintenance cost would be borne by the charitable trust of Dr Amita and Dr Avinash Phadnis.

BENEFICIARIES: Annually, over 250,000 needy out patients will benefit for gynecology and pediatric medical care along with safe and healthy deliveries of well over 1000 babies of low-income families. The ten-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) will greatly reduce the infant mortality rate at this hospital and other Municipal Corporation hospitals also, hence in the city of Pune.

MATCHING PARTNERS: RC Pune Ganeshkhind along with other clubs in RID 3131 is seeking matching partners in international Rotary Clubs to complete this “Infant Mortality Reduction” project to make “Make Dreams Real”. This project will provide positive publicity to Rotary International in reducing infant mortality in Pune. The sponsoring host clubs and district will be responsible for proper selection, reporting and auditing of the project besides ensuring proper usage and maintenance of the equipment. The international clubs and district will assist in financing and supervising the project, besides visiting the actual hospital upon completion.
