   Malawi - Lilongwe

Generator for Hospital/School

$45,695

This project is a project of Serving Hands International

The purpose of this project is to install a generator in Malawi, Africa that will run the ABC Community Clinic and the ABC Christian Academy when the power company can’t. In Malawi the Electrical Supply Corporation Of Malawi (ESCOM) is unreliable in its provision of electricity. There are both scheduled and unscheduled black-outs. During the raining season, power plants have become flooded, causing black-outs for days and weeks at a time. This project aims to provide a solution to this problem and keep the services up and running more consistently.

The ABC Community clinic is a hospital designed to help those in the community. The fee to see a doctor is kept at one US dollar. That fee is subsidized by private appointments. Drugs are also purchased from specialty vendors in Europe that sell only to developing countries at significant discounts. This way the low costs for quality service and medicine can be passed onto the community. This year the clinic is planning to treat 30,000 people. The clinic also has a significant HIV/AIDS program that is educating, and donating Anti-Retroviral drugs to the community.

The ABC Christian Academy is an international school providing pre-school though 12th grade education. The enrollment is 50% Malawians and 50% international students. The school has a reputation for offering top quality education at pricing that the general community can afford. There are 280 students this year.

Both operations suffer when the electricity is out. The lights, medical equipment, computers, copiers etc. all don’t work for unknown periods of time when ESCOM goes off. A generator will keep all this equipment functioning whenever the local power company can’t.
