Summary: Provide dictionaries to all third graders in Carlsbad Unified School District.
This established hands on literacy outreach project is a favorite of Rotarians, teachers, and students. Many Rotarians are given the opportunity to visit all 3rd grade classrooms in Carlsbad in teams of two where they talk to students about Rotary and the importance of education. They then provide all third graders with their own dictionary, an important educational resource for every child to improve reading and vocabulary, as well as other skills like alphabetical order, word origins and relationships, and spelling. As needed, native Spanish speakers are also provided with a Spanish/English dictionary. There is a large population of Spanish speakers in Carlsbad schools, so this additional resource is very helpful. The club often receives thank you notes from students detailing how they are using the dictionaries to assist in their studies.
