Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Gbaiima of Sierra Leone

Total Budget: $4,000

Area of Focus: Water and sanitation

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Water well for a health clinic in Gbo/Gbaiima in Sierra Leone

There is a clinic that serves the poor in the middle of the country on the northern end of Bo District and approximately 238 kilometers from the capital of Freetown. The population of Gbo/Gaiima village itself is estimated at 10,000 people. Gbo/Gbaiima is by and large 95% Mende tribe, the second largest tribe in Sierra Leone. It has no industry and the village is incapable of supporting itself. Flowing streams are sites for collecting drinking water, washing, laundry and waste. Running water and plumbing is not available. A simple water pump and well can save the community from hours of walking. The Disabled Children Camp in Bo is home for several children Polio. Unfortunately due to the lack of proper maintenance and the unsanitary conditions of most open water wells they are not considered a viable source of fresh water. I've been working with a local non-profit called Family Enrichment Services of Sierra Leone to organize and implement the project. They need the funds asap to build the well.
