We are working to replace a pavilion that was taken down due to safety concerns. The pavilion will provide a place for residents and tourists to learn about the Homer Kachemak Bay Water trail at the actual trailhead. It will include interpretive panels about the trail, Water Safety and the Homer Kachemak Bay Critical Habitat. The project will support economic and community development as we teach others about all that there is to offer on Kachemak Bay and the Homer Spit.
The project is estimated at $35,000. To date we have received $15,000 from the Rasmusson Foundation, $5,000 from the club, $5,000 from the Homer Foundation and $2500 in private donations. We are hoping to order the materials in the 2016 season and construct in 2016. Club members are helping with the fund raising as well as the logistics of setting up the project thru the construction and completion.
This will be a community effort in the style of an old fashioned barn raising. The pavilion will be aprox 20x40 with a compacted gravel floor. It is located next to the fishing lagoon at the beginning of the water trail and provides amazing views of the mountains, ocean, glaciers and Kachemak Bay.
Seabirds, shorebirds, eagles, otters and even whales can be seen from the pavilion area. Community events will be held there and it will available for use by public and private groups.
The pavilion will be on City of Homer land and managed by the City of Homer Parks and Recreation.
The City of Homer has put up $5,000.00 and we have several other smaller donations to date. The Homer Wooden Boat Society, Cook Inlet Keeper, Department of Fish and Game Critical Habitat Division and the Homer Downtown Rotary Club are just some of the supporters for this community project.
The pavilion will also have an International component. In addition to a Rotary Wheel we are working on displaying Rotary flags from other clubs and District around the world. We hope to make the pavilion a must see project for every Rotarian who travels to the end of the road.
We hope to advance understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of our community. We hope to provide free outdoor activity to promote health for all person of various economic means, provide information about the importance of protecting and preserving our environment and supporting education of others locally and globally about the splendors and value of Kachemak Bay.
