Summary: Kodiak Near Island Trails for high school cross country track team and community recreation
Improvement of Near Island trails that are used by community members and also training the Kodiak High School cross country track team. Near Island is within Kodiak City limits. Kodiak has a wet maritime climate in timbered rocky terrain so that trails require improvement for the high use they receive. This is a collaborative project among the two Kodiak Rotary clubs (Noon club taking the administrative lead), Island Trails http://www.islandtrails.org/ (a Kodiak NGO), and the Kodiak High School track team.
Kodiak City population 6,300 and its near surrounding population high participation in outdoor activities and therefore accessible trails benefit much of the population. The trail improvements will be made largely by the Kodiak High School Track Team employed mornings (team training afternoons) by the Island Trails organization supervised by their faculty coach. Also there will be weekend citizen volunteer work parties (in past Island Trails projects volunteers numbered between six and twenty). Rotarian involvement will include helping the volunteers. A Morning club Rotarian assists with cross country team coaching and is also an Island Trails board member. Important for this project is the collaboration among the High School track team, the local NGO Island Trails, community volunteers who are not Rotarians, plus Rotarians.
