Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Torrington, Wyoming

Total Budget: $8,000

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: Renovation

Summary: Required renovation/upgrades to the non-profit Thrift store which provides food and assistance to the needy in Goshen County, Wyoming.

Land of Goshen Ministries is a Goshen County, Wyoming non-profit, non-denominational charity organization that assists approximately 130 needy families by providing food suppliments once a month (including federal commodities). In addition, those families and other needy people may receive emergency food, clothing, household items and furniture as needed. Land of Goshen receives its revenue from profits from a Thrift store that it owns and operates with volunteer help. In addition, it receives donations of food, money, thrift items and labor from local churches, businesses, and individuals.

In the last year extensive termite damage has been discovered in several areas of the store and the original carpet is now threat bear and becoming a danger for those who volunteer and seek the services of the facility. The eight thousand dollar ($8,000) grant ($4,000 local and $4,000 district) will be combined with the volunteer efforts of our Club members and their families, to assist Land of Goshen in its mission of providing food and support to the needy families of Goshen County. The project funds will be used to contract professional services for the repair of termite damage; and the tear out and replacement of worn and damaged flooring in the Thrift store. The balance of the project funds will be used to purchase food for qualifying needy families. Local Rotary members and some of their family members will volunteer to hand out food on commodity days and work at the Thrift store during the 2016-17 Rotary Year. The proposed grant meets the mission of the Rotary Foundation through its focus on maternal and child health and Economic and Community Development. The project will not only update an aging but critical facility--it will also provide another avenue for Community service for our Club.

Goshen County ranks 22nd of 23 counties in per capita income in Wyoming. The free or reduced lunch rate for the county school district is around 50%. Given the current economic conditions, unemployment and poverty are increasing and charitable giving is decreasing. This grant will go a long way in reducing hunger and the effects of poverty for a large number of families in Goshen County.
