Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Hailey Idaho

Total Budget: $29,348

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: This project, at Rotarun Ski Club, will provide 5 to 11 year olds with after school training in alpine skiing and racing.

The need is to provide affordable, healthy after school activities for children that might not be able to utilize the Sun Valley skiing facilities. This project is a cooperative effort between Rotarun (named for the Hailey Rotary Club that was instrumental in establishing and fostering the ski hill) and the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF). Rotarun provides the venue and SVSEF provides coaches. The program consists of eight weeks of Wednesday and Friday training sessions for children from 5 to 11 years old. The Learn to Apline Ski and Race (LASAR) program provides instruction in skiing techniques, ski racing skills and team building strategies. It also provides participants with an introduction to a healthy, potentially lifelong sports activity that they might not be able to experience otherwise. The past 2015 season goal was to provide 50 children the opportunity to ski in the LASAR program. The actual enrollment of 65 exceeded that goal and the 2016 season is expected to surpass 2015. The club contribution amount includes donations from other charitable organizations that support the LASAR program. This project fits with Rotary goals by providing education, promoting a healthy lifestyle, helping children afford to participate in positive activities and building community.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

Please refer to the Documents tab for details on the cost of the LASAR program.

Another factor, besides the $3,000 donation, that shows strong Hailey Rotary Club support for the Rotarun ski area is the fact that three current Hailey Rotary members sit on the Rotarun Board of Directors and several members have helped with service projects for the ski area.

You can incorporate your spending plan into the narrative unless it's complicated, in which case a separate spreadsheet (refer to it in your narrative) is helpful. Is $29,348 the budget for the entire LASAR program for the year or is that the budget for Hailey Rotary's participation in LASAR? Your grant application should be what your club's participation represents, not the entire program. Makes your reporting easier.
