This project is to send a 40 foot container of textbooks to the Dawro Education Department to be used in schools throughout the Dawro Zone, Ethiopia. According to the Dawro Education Department there are currently over 158,000 students enrolled in 372 public schools throughout the Dawro Zone. However, there is a total of only 39,676 textbooks in all of these schools. This equates to 1 textbook for every 4 students. Please note this is for all subjects not for each subject. If a typical student has 6 subjects that means he has a 1 in 24 chance of seeing a textbook in any given class. Ethiopian children have significant challenges in receiving a quality education, having access to a textbook should be one obstacle that can be lessened. Books for Africa, a non-profit group headquartered in Minnesota, will provide, free-of-charge, approximately 22,000 textbooks conservatively valued at $264,000 by the US Internal Revenue Service (see attached). These books are either new or gently used and all in good condition and published within the past 10 years. They have provided millions of such books to schools throughout Africa for a number of years. These books will be placed in a 40 foot sea container and Books for Africa will make all necessary arrangements to send it to the Dawro Education Department, Tarcha, Ethiopia. The only cost is the shipping fees. Also attached is their current estimate of what this fee ($16,300) would be to ship the container from their warehouse in Atlanta, Ga. to the Dawro Education Department in Tarcha, Ethiopia. Mr. Godaye Gomiole, head of the Dawro Education Department, has identified what his priorities are in terms of grade level and subjects (see attached). He believes emphasis should be given to schools with severe problems especially in the preparatory and high school levels. He has also asked for special help in the fields of Mathematics, Science and English. Books for Africa allows us to request specific grade levels and subject matter textbooks and we would tailor our request to meet the requirements of the local officials. Timeline: the textbooks will be shipped during 2017. Rotary funds will be used for shipping, customs, and taxes fees. The Rotary Club of Fort Collins Breakfast has an active Global Grant to provide clean drinking water to three villages in the Dawro Zone and is developing a second Global Grant to provide clean drinking water to three additional villages in the Dawro Zone. This District Grant will help grown the Dawro Zone community by fulfilling another of the Rotary six areas of focus, namely supporting education. The Rotary Club of Fort Collins Breakfast will be working with the Dawro Zone Government and the Dawro Development Association to continue to help grow the community as described by the Rotary Six Areas of Focus.

The shipment of books is on its way to the port of Djibouti and should arrive February 6. It then needs to go through customs and overland to Tercha, Dawro Zone, to the Dawro Education Department.

There have been delays. Textbooks are now ready to leave the port of Djibouti for Ethiopia. I will consider the grant complete when the books reach the town of Tercha and the offices of the Dawro Education Department.
