During the Fall of 2013, Rotary Club of La Mirada will work with local schools in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District to identify 40 students in need of new, warm clothing. In early December 2013, Rotarians, public safety personnel and other community volunteers will host the needy students on a Holiday Shopping Spree at Marshalls Department Store, which will open early for the children. Each needy student will receive approximately $75 in shoes, jackets, pants, shirts and other personal items that they need. These children's attitude in the classroom is expected to reflect a greater sense of self-confidence and personal comfort as a result of the new, warm clothing. Students will also be taken by bus to The Palms Retirement Community where they will receive presents and take part in an intergenerational holiday party with senior citizens living in the facility.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
Additional Projects:
1. In recent years La Mirada Rotarians have supported a Community Thanksgiving Dinner in the Foster Park neighborhood, which is La Mirada's oldest and least affluent area. Foster Park area residents are primarily Hispanic. La Mirada Rotary joins with the La Mirada Kiwanis Club, Ebell Club, local churches and area businesses to sponsor the Thanksgiving Dinner for upwards of 600 people at Foster Road Elementary School. This event brings together neighbors and serves to develop a stronger sense of community and involvement. Volunteers from the Rotary Club and the School PTA will assist with preparing a meal of turkey, dressing, gravy, vegetables and dessert. La Mirada High School Interact Club members will serve the dinner in the school cafeteria. Members of the City's Public Safety Team will be present to address any concerns or issues raised by local residents. Although the 1,000 or so homes immediately surrounding the school are the primary audience of this service project, no one who comes is turned away as long as the food lasts. The Rotary Club of La Mirada is requesting District assistance with this project so its contribution to the Community Thanksgiving Dinner can be increased to a total of $2,000. The La Mirada Rotary Club's contribution will be $1,000. The additional funding will assist in meeting the increasing needs seen in the local community in recent years. This project serves to make the holiday period brighter for many who would not otherwise be able to afford a quality Thanksgiving dinner for their families. Press releases and photographs regarding the Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be sent to the Whittier Daily News, La Mirada Lamplighter and La Mirada Blog. Media coverage will help to reinforce the important role that the Rotary Club plays in the La Mirada community. The money will be spent at a local supermarket for turkeys and fixings. It is impossible to give a detailed budget at this time as we are unsure of the cost of the turkeys and other items.
2. The Good Sam Pantry in La Mirada at the Beatitudes Church supplies food to needy families regardless of race, creed, etc. We will purchase $700 worth of food such as: CANNED FOOD: soup, fruit, vegetables, tuna, chicken, chili, beans, stew; BOXED FOOD: breakfast cereal, crackers, oatmeal, raisins, macaroni & cheese, juice boxes, tuna/hamburger Helper, jello, pudding mix, pancake mix, cake mix; PACKAGED FOOD: pasta, rice, cookies, pudding cups, granola bars, dried beans, top ramen; JARS: peanut butter, jam, spaghetti sauce. We are requesting DDF of $350 to match our club contribution of $350. Our club Rotarians will identify which foods are needed and then shop for and deliver the food to the pantry.
