The proposed project will enable an artist to come to the Dayspring Community Center in Nodine Hill of Yonkers to provide students with 2 workshops each consisting of 12 two-hour sessions, one per week to learn visual arts in lessons on various art forms. The project will run from September 2018 to June 2019. Each workshop will conclude with a public performance or artistic product. Club members will assist in the logistics of the program, publicity, arranging for supplies and after-program evaluation.
Community Need: Westhab, Westchester's largest provider of affordable housing and supportive services and our Club's partner in this project, has been working in Nodine Hill, a target area in the City of Yonkers Community Development Program, for many years. Its Dayspring Community Center provides free after-school and summer programs in academic support, social emotional learning and positive behavior and habits. Its community surveys have shown the need for youth to have access to arts programs that have been largely eliminated from Yonkers Public Schools.
