Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Thermoplis Wyoming

Total Budget: $8,500

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: Up dating the Locall VFW hall's bath rooms, kitchen, and meeting room will benefit the VFW, Rotary and Community of Thermopolis Wyoming.

The local VFW facilities are utilized frequently for not only Rotary events but also community events such as celebrations of lives and fundraiser for members of the community to help pay medical bills. Having access to the facilities has proven to be instrumental for the community in supporting one another. The kitchen is in need of being updated along with the bath rooms and the large room typically used for all kinds of community events. Two $2000 will be used for to update appliances and equipment in the kitchen to bring it up to date and more efficient. One $1000 will be used to update each of the bath rooms with new fixtures for a total of $2000. There for we are requesting $4000. The large room is roughly 1200 square feet and will benefit drastically from an update in the paint. Additional work will be put into the facilities as funding allows. The majority of the labor will be on a voluntary basis in order to make the funds go as far as possible to have a greater impact for the community.

In February the Rotary will hold a fund raiser in conjunction with the VFW to help raise funds for this project. The work will then be performed thought the year as funds are made available and the priority of work has been established with the help of the VFW manager.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

The VFW and Rotary held their fundraising event and raised approximately $16,000. Now the VFW is in the process of establishing priorities for the upgrades. Due to the hail storm that totaled the roof of the building it become the highest priority for the project. A significant portion of the work has been complete. The contractor will finish the work as funds allow. This project will be completed once the roof has been fully repaired and the building has no more leaks causing further water damage. The completion of the repairs is projected to be in the spring of 2020. Please see attached addendum to the budget.

The last I heard, the VFW is very appreciative of the funds and are planning to start the work this fall. That time frame may change because the Town of Thermopolis had a massive hail storm on July 1st and contractors are extremely busy right now. Fortunately the VFW project is inside, so the work can be done in the winter time.

The VFW held a fundraiser for upgrades to their building and raised over $21,000. Then Thermopolis experienced 2 bad hailstorms this summer and the funds were needed to fix roof damage from the hail storm. We have had numerous conversations with the VFW Board and there are still a couple leaks from the roof repair. The contractor cannot get them fixed until spring (2020). We (Rotary) do not want to do our painting and fixing up until we are sure it won't be ruined by the water leaks. We are planning on doing as much of the preparation work as we can do this winter so we will be able to finish up after the water leaks are taken care of.

The VFW roof was damaged during a hail storm last summer. Their insurance is paying to repair and replace the exterior roof, and that work is complete now. But, there is significant damage on the inside ceiling tiles and insulation. We have met with them and gotten updates during COVID, but their board is mostly elderly, and they are not meeting regularly at this time. Once they resume meetings, we can find out what they want to do with the funds from this project. They are trying to remain open with reduced hours during COVID, and they have another source of income potential on the horizon. Once we are able, we can find out how they prefer to spend this money, and begin work.

The project is still ongoing. We are working with the VFW to schedule a time for the work. Because of delays with other improvements, the time frame was moved back.
